Simmons College

300 The Fenway Boston, MA 02115

•Nii

Since its establishment in 1899,
Simmons College has been educating

women to succeed.

Each day we ^valk through the doors
of the Main College Building,
and we are surrounded by a sea of

culture, knowledge, and

a variety of relationships.

Simmons College invites ^vomen

to become part of that sea.

It introduces us to the many advantages

that an all-women's college can provide.

It encourages us to prove that

as ^vomen and students,

we offer many characteristics and skills that can

make a difference in history.

This year's Microcosm offers a special look
at some famous introductions at Simmons College,
as well as the diversity of the present community.
It also reminds us of the pioneers and events
that have been a major part in American History.

This year's Microcosm staff challenges you to become
part of history and take a step to becoming

Dedication

Two women, respected as administration and loved as
friends and mentors. Kristie Gerber and Sharon Duffy,
as student activitiespioneers, were t\vo women many
student leaders had the pleasure meeting and working
with collaboratively. Both women exemplified, in each
her own >vay, a unique approach and style of providing
the Simmons undergraduates with an array of programs,
activities, and events. Simultaneously, they encour-
aged students to pursue leadership roles, while provid-
ing avenues for individuals to make their voices heard.
Kristie and Sharon thank you, for the students that you
have touched are all better leaders because of you.

are the professors. Sim-
mons professors go out
of their way to connect
with students individu-
ally. The phrase "not
just a number" not only
applies to the Simmons
College atmosphere,
but also to the attitudes
of the professors.
Thanks to their dedica-
tion, Simmons students
continue to achieve
academic success.

On behalf of the Simmons College faculty and staff,

I am delighted to offer our

congratulations

to the class of 2001 . Because many people believe the new
millennium actually begins this year, I think we can congratulate you as

the first graduating class of this millennium!

Fifty years from now

I hope you will return for your 50th Reunion.
Although I suspect you will be

wiser,

perhaps grayer and less agile, I am confident you also will be

full of pride in your life's accomplishments.

In my travels around the country speaking with alumnae, I have
learned that Simmons graduates have had incredibly interesting

and fulfilling lives.

Truly they are

pioneers in their professions

and communities. They have reached career goals they never
imagined. They have gained satisfaction from families and personal

relationships with friends.

I predict that many of you, like these alums, will have achieved
significant leadership positions in your chosen fields and been

contributing members of your communities.

Sports

Amidst the papers,
projects, lectures, and
study breaks, some
Simmons students feel
there is still something
missing in their college
careers. In one word:
sports. The need to
compete, to be part of a
team, to achieve com-
plete satisfaction after
winning a game, and to
be challenged by a loss.
The combination of the
physical and mental
training and their aca-
demic pursuits and
goals creates the ideal
college experience for
these students.

Crew

With awesome accuracy and power, the Simmons College Varsity
and Novice Crew teams sped through another three fantastic
seasons of 5 a.m. practices, workouts, indoor rowing, soccer and
basketball training, not to mention three incredible competitive
seasons. This year's varisity team ended up at New England's
Championship making it all the way to the Petite Finals, pulling
through a "bow-ball to bow-ball" race, placing them fourth in the
Preliminaries! Simmons Crew finished their year with tears as they
said good-bye to senior and co-captain Kate Killilea. Also, with
much appreciation, the team thanks Novice Head Coach, Rick
Brown, Varsity Head Coach, Nikolay Kurmakov and Athletic
Director, Ali Kantor. Also, special thanks goes out to Varsity co-
captain Gretchen Horner- Wright for her participation in this year's
yearbook.

Basketball

This season was the start of something new for the women's basketball team. The Sharks entered the 2000-01 season
with a mix of veteran and new players. Among the new faces in the fall was Head Coach Tony Price. Players started
their pre-season early in October under new leadership and not knowing what exactly to expect from the new look that
Simmons Basketball would soon take on. It did not take long for the Sharks to realize that things were changing, as a
different style of basketball was taking form, pretty soon the Sharks finished the season with a record of 6-15, tripling
their win total from the previous year. The season was not only measured by wins and losses, but also more importantly
by the recognition that a strong foundation was established for the future success as the rebuilding process continues.
The Sharks say good-bye to senior co-captains Kristen Roberts and Amy Heath, along with other senior teammates
Jessica Vasbinder and Ivy Nimley.

Student Activities

Academic excellence is
not the only important
virtue that Simmons
Students have. They
also display dedication
to their extra-curricular
activities. Each Sim-
mons student adds
character and value to
their graduating class
and their college.
Being a student leader
becomes not only an
extra activity to keep
you busy, but here at
Simmons, it becomes a

way of life.

Reflect

Why get involved in extracurriculars
at Simmons College you ask?

The answer is in any student who contributes to a club or

organization at Simmons College. Student involvment outside

the classroom enhances the overall college experience. Aside

from meeting new friends and building confidence, students find

themselves intertwined in a community of bright, motivated,

and focused individuals who are determined to give back to this

thriving environment. Needless to say, student involvment in

the clubs and organizations at Simmons College provides the

chance for personal growth, but most importantly the chance to

build memories. Throughout the next several pages, we give

you a chance to reflect on some of the good times shared by the

clubs and organizations during this past year.

Famous First

How much do you
actually know about
Simmons College?
Well we all know it
was founded in 1 899
by John Simmons.
But did you know that
the first residence hall
was originally built in
1905 - that's right, we
did not always guar-
antee housing ! Or
that the first issue of
the Simmons News
was distributed on
October 29, 1923?
Take a look at several
other famous firsts for
Simmons (I^ollege . . .

A Famous Flight

Until 1903, controlled, powered flight seemed impos-
sible until Orville Wright took off on December 17th
with his brother, Wilbur, looking on during the
"Wright Flyer's" first flight. Their success can be at-
tributed to their engineering that went beyond the trial
and error methods of others. They were the first to
understand how the lift from the aerofoil changes in
flight. The "Wright Flyer" travelled a distance of 120
feet remaining in the air for 1 2 seconds in Kitty Hawk,

North Carolina.

The Debut

A

Ed Sullivan, center, stands with the Beatles during a
rehearsal for the British group's first American appear-
ance on the "Ed Sullivan Show." "The Fab Four" ap-
peared live on the show in New York on February 9,
1964, as 70 million viewers were overtaken by Ringo,
George, John, and Paul. "Beatlemania" swept the
charts with twenty Number One hits and more than
100 million records sold.

First Strides

Neil Armstrong and Edwin E. "Buzz" Aldrin became
the first men to land on the moon. On July 20, 1969
these two men proudly planted the American flag into
the lunar surface. This accomplishment was encour-
aged by President Kennedy in 1961 when he declared
it "time for a great new American enterprise ~
time for this nation to take a clearly leading role in
space achievement, which in many ways may
hold the key to our future on earth."

Flowers in Our Hair

The Woodstock Music and Art Fair in 1969 drew more
than 450,000 people to a pasture in Sulhvan County,
New York. The music continued for four days but the
fair was more than a music festival, it was the Age of
Aquarius. During this time of wearing beads, flowers,
and feathers, young minds were opened and love was
"free."

Lady Justice

Among the many people to make a breakthrough in
American history was Sandra Day O'Connor. Justice
O'Connor was appointed by President Reagan during
the women's movement in 1981, making her the first
female Supreme Court Justice. O'Connor is well-
known for her conservative views.
"Do the best you can in every task, no matter how
unimportant it may seem at the time. No one learns
more about a problem than the person at the bottom."

The Candidate

In 1984, America experienced a persistent team of
political members including Geraldine Ferraro, the
first woman to run for the vice-presidential position at
the White House. Her job as chief of the Democratic
Platform Committee helped win the confidence of the
1984 Democratic Presidential nominee, Walter
Mondale. Although the two were defeated by Ronald
Reagan and George Bush, Ferraro remained active in
politics, as well as becoming the author of Ferraro:
My Story and Geraldine Ferraro: Changing History.

Heidi,

You've Made It!!! Congratulations On
Graduating From Simmons College, Class
Of 2001. We're All Very Proud Of You.
MOM, DAD, & ANDREW

Along with the people who helped put this book together, I'd like to
thank the people who have donated a great deal of their time to help
make this book happen. First and foremost, thank you to the mem-
bers of the yearbook staff. Our small group of five worked each day
to gather photos, design pages and organize schedules to put this
book together. As the editor I appreciate the effort and time spent by
Cathy Erlich, Kellie Chandler. Also, many thanks goes to graduate
assistant, Richard Wong, for helping to reorganize the Microcosm.
And, this book wouldn't be complete without a special thank you to
Kate Lindquist, for keeping me awake and sane during our many
many all-nighters! Her help has tremendously reformatted the book
and we're looking forward to another great year!
As always we thank Josten's our publishing company for always
being there with answers. As well as Davor Photography for their
work with the seniors. Also the school's photographer William
Mercer whose work is displayed throughout the book.
Of course, the Microcosm is a reflection of the students, faculty
members and events of Simmons College, but this year I would also
like to highlight one department in particuler, that being the Archive
Department. Each year this department lends their hands to gather-
ing photos and information for the Microcosm. With sincere appre-
ciation I say thank you to every person in the Archive Department.

Thank you,
Emily Schepis
